KILLINGTON BRINGING A LITTLE FUN & SWEETNESS TO 2010 POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS WITH OLD FASHIONED ICE CREAM SOCIAL

Over a dozen candidates, a barbershop quartet, a giant hay elephant and donkey, bobbing for apples and ice cream highlight old-fashioned Vermont style rally
KILLINGTON – How ‘bout a little hot fudge with your campaign speech? All the sweeter if that speech is delivered from atop an old-fashioned soapbox! Moving the stump speech to the soapbox is the idea behind the Town of Killington’s Ice Cream Social and Old Fashioned Political Rally scheduled at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26th at the Events Hall on River Road. Long on sweet and short on speech, the event will take place next to giant party symbols, a hay elephant (R) and donkey (D), feature a barbershop quartet and bobbing for apples. All the proceeds from $1 sundaes will benefit the Audubon Society.
The social is part of the town’s month-long celebration of autumn that includes 35 massive hay sculptures throughout town known as the Grass Menagerie, a hay maze for kids and weekend events to provide residents and visitors alike a taste of fall in Vermont.
“The ice cream social and old time political rally are as much a part of Vermont’s heritage as apple pie and autumn harvest,” notes Seth Webb, director of Killington Tourism and Economic Development. “It’s a chance to catch up with neighbors, meet the candidates and enjoy a little fun and ice cream on an early fall afternoon.”
The event will be co-hosted by the Democratic and Republican Rutland County Chairmen, and all ten Rutland County Vermont Senate candidates and the local district Vermont House candidates have committed to attend. In addition, several statewide candidates including Lt. Governor Candidates Phil Scott and Steve Howard, State Auditor Candidate Tom Salmon and Secretary of State Jason Gibbs are expected to be on hand. Each will be given two minutes on the soapbox to make their “pitch” for votes. The Barbershop Quartet, “The Green Mountain Boys" will perform and Killington’s own Town Moderator, M.B. Neisner, will emcee. Ice cream sundaes will be sold for $1 each, with proceeds going to the Audubon Society for their conservation work, including their support of habitat restoration in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Killington Hay Festival, which runs Labor Day Weekend through Columbus Day, features the Grass Menagerie, hay maze and a variety of special events to attract visitors to the town. A complete schedule of events is available at discoverkillington.com.
