Governor Jim Douglas Proclaims Killington Stage Race Days

Posted on May 24, 2020

MONTPELIER—Governor James Douglas has declared May 29-31 as Killington Stage Race Days;  the official kick-off to summer in Vermont,  in tribute to the legendary bicycle race that has attracted more than 550 riders in its return year. Gov. Douglas and Vermont Tourism Commissioner Bruce Hyde stood atop the Stage Race podium on the statehouse steps today while the Governor read his official proclamation. They were joined by Killington Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay and Killington Economic Development and Tourism Commission (EDTC) Director Seth Webb.

“Whereas the Town of Killington this Memorial Day Weekend is bringing back the Killington Stage Race, the Legend of New England bicycle racing, attracting hundreds of riders from throughout Vermont and the Northeast, I James H. Douglas, do proclaim May 29-31, 2010 as Killington Stage Race Days in Vermont,” read part of the proclamation.

The three-day race has attracted more than 450 racers who have pre-registered to compete Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There will be three stages including a circuit race, a long individual time trial and a road race. The general category will be scored on time. The race will feature both a King and Queen of the Mountains and a Sprint Competition.

Once one of cycling’s top events, the race is returning under the sponsorship of the Town of Killington EDTC with additional support from Long Trail Brewery and the Mountain Times.
