VERMONT HOLIDAY FESTIVAL RETURNS TO KILLINGTON RESORT DEC. 9-11

Festivities include the Festival of Trees, Santa’s Workshop, Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides,
Jack Frost Marketplace and Live Entertainment

KILLINGTON, VT (Nov. 2, 2010) – The Vermont Holiday Festival returns to Killington Resort with appearances by Santa and promises to provide a festive weekend in celebration of the holiday season Dec. 9-11. One hundred uniquely decorated trees, the smell of balsam in the air, musical performances and themed events are at the center of this special December event held at the Snowshed Base Lodge at Killington Resort, a new venue for the Festival.

Produced by the Killington Chamber of Commerce, the 6th Annual Vermont Holiday Festival is back and better than ever. “The new location of Snowshed Base Lodge offers many positive things, including an expanded room and better visibility,” says Festival Director Erin Shimp.  The new venue allows the Festival to grow with many fresh features, including the newly added Jack Frost Marketplace - a holiday shopping component that will feature local artisans and vendors. Plus, a bar area with a bistro seating overlooking the Festival of Trees where guests can enjoy their favorite spirit or holiday dessert in the company of family and friends. A family-style buffet will be available for a convenient dining option while enjoying all the festival has to offer.

Throughout the festival, children can attend Santa’s Workshop, and ends with a Christmas story reading and a visit from Santa and his elves.

Local businesses from throughout the region participate in the Festival by sponsoring a tree for the Festival of Trees and decorating it with their own style and flair.  Festival attendees may purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win their favorite tree.  At the Festival finale on Saturday night, a drawing will be held for each tree and the winners will take home a Vermont Christmas tree with all the trimmings. This year, tree sponsors will compete to win the honor of Most Popular Tree and walk away with an Apple iPad.

Each day, there will be several live musical performances from area artists and school groups.  The line up for this year includes, Sherburne Elementary School, Rutland Town School, Barstow Memorial School, Bridgewater Elementary School and Mt. Saint Joseph Academy.  In addition, the Centre Dance Studio will perform a live dance led by Tara Bombardier and acclaimed Vermont piano soloist and composer Cody Michaels will perform his award-winning “Winter Suite.”

The Vermont Holiday Festival received the prestigious recognition from the Vermont Chamber of Commerce as a Top Ten Winter Event. With more than 800 people attending the weekend festivities in 2008, the Killington Chamber of Commerce hopes this recognition will bring a larger influx of attendees and send more families home with decorated, authentic Vermont Christmas trees. This year, the Festival is focusing on giving back to the local community. On Thursday, attendees can donate a canned good for admission into the event.

In addition, contributions will be accepted for local organizations and events, such as the Killington Music Festival.

Admission to the Vermont Holiday Festival is $5 for adults; children ages 12 and under are free. Admission includes: entrance to the Festival, free sleigh rides from Heritage Hills Farm, face painting and hot chocolate. Raffle tickets for the Festival of Trees will be sold throughout the weekend at the cost of  $10 for 25 tickets.  Admission to Santa’s Workshop is $10 per child and is based on availability.  The workshop is one hour and includes a handcrafted toy and story time.  To buy advanced tickets to the Vermont Holiday Festival or Santa’s Workshop visit www.killingtonchamber.com.

In addition to the activities at the Vermont Holiday Festival, guests may enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Killington, the largest ski and snowboard resort in eastern North America. With the most extensive snowmaking system in North America, Killington typically offers two to three times more open terrain than most resorts in the East by early December.
